Gensets

Diesel Gensets for Refrigerated Containers

A reefer container needs 460 volt, three-phase, 60 Hz power to hold temperature. In a terminal it draws that from shore power; on the road it needs its own diesel generator set. We stock both mounting styles across the Thermo King SG and Carrier PowerLINE ranges.

Clip-On Gensets

Clip-on gensets hang on the front wall of the container and lock in with a pin-mount or clamp-mount frame, so one genset can serve a whole yard of containers as loads move. Thermo King’s SG-3000, SG-3500 and SG-5000 and Carrier’s 69RG15 PowerLINE sets are all in this class.

Undermount Gensets

Undermount gensets bolt to the rails of a container chassis and stay with the trailer. They free the container’s front wall, sit lower for bridge clearance, and typically carry a larger fuel tank for long hauls. See the Thermo King undermount, SG-4000 and Carrier 69UG15 sets.

Sizing and Run Time

Nearly all container gensets in service are rated 15 kW / 18.75 kVA at 460 V AC, 3-phase, 60 Hz — enough for a single reefer container with margin for pull-down. Fuel tanks run from about 50 to 125 gallons, which is roughly one to three days of continuous running depending on ambient temperature and setpoint. For stationary standby power in the hundreds of kilowatts, see our Caterpillar G3516 gas generator set instead.
