They are larger, typically 120 gallons and up, and must meet ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code standards. DOT tanks (U.S. Department of Transportation) are portable cylinders designed for transport, such as forklift tanks, barbecue cylinders, and portable heater bottles. DOT cylinders require periodic recertification (every 12 years).

A well-maintained ASME propane tank has a service life of 30–40 years or more. Tanks are subject to periodic inspection by your propane supplier. Underground tanks benefit from cathodic protection (magnesium anode bags) to prevent corrosion. DOT cylinders must be recertified every 12 years. Buying a certified used ASME tank with proper documentation is a sound investment when budget is a priority.

No. Above-ground (AG) propane tanks are painted and not coated for soil contact — burying an AG tank will cause rapid corrosion and is a safety hazard. Underground propane tanks (UG) have a special protective coating and are paired with a magnesium anode bag for cathodic protection. Always purchase a tank specifically rated and coated for underground use if you plan to bury it.

For a whole-home propane system (heating, hot water, cooking, and dryer), the general rule is: 500 gallons for homes up to 3,500 sq ft in moderate climates; 1,000 gallons for homes over 3,500 sq ft or in colder northern climates. Per NFPA 58, above-ground propane tanks must be placed a minimum distance from buildings and ignition sources based on capacity: tanks under 125 gallons require at least 10 feet; 125–500 gallon tanks require 10 feet from buildings; 501–2,000 gallon tanks require 25 feet.
