NH3 Tanks and Anhydrous Ammonia Transports

Anhydrous ammonia is stored and hauled the same way propane is: as a liquefied gas under its own vapour pressure, in a welded steel pressure vessel built to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII. That is why NH3 equipment sits naturally alongside our propane tanks — the vessels, valves, pumps and inspection regime are close cousins.

MC-331 Transport Trailers

The trailers listed here are DOT MC-331 cargo tanks in the 10,400 to 10,450 gallon class, the standard size for moving NH3 from a terminal to a farm co-op or a process plant. Both carry a 265 PSI maximum allowable working pressure, a Blackmer transfer pump, a tank volume gauge, tandem axles on spring suspension and aluminium wheels, and both are National Board registered.

What NH3 Is Used For

Most anhydrous ammonia in the United States goes into agriculture as a direct-application nitrogen fertiliser. The rest goes to industry: it is the refrigerant of choice for large cold storage and food processing plants, a reagent in pharmaceutical and petrochemical manufacture, and the reducing agent in the SCR systems that scrub NOx from power station flue gas.

Handling and Compliance

NH3 is a hazardous material. Loading, unloading and transport are governed by 49 CFR, the tank must be periodically inspected and pressure tested to keep its MC-331 qualification, and operators need hazmat endorsement and the right personal protective equipment. We supply the equipment, the National Board number and the last inspection paperwork; the compliance programme is yours to run.
