Which Emissions Series Do You Need?
PowerLINE gensets are the same machine in different emissions clothing, and the series number is the only thing that changes the compliance answer:
- Series 5 — US EPA Tier 4 interim, for markets where legacy Tier 4i levels meet or exceed local standards
- Series 13 — US EPA Tier 4
- Series 24 — meets the 2023 CARB requirement for engines in the 8-19 kW class
- Series 55 — EU Stage V
Buy for where the unit will actually work. A Stage V set will operate anywhere; a Tier 4 interim set will not satisfy a Stage V inspection.

Fuel, Service and Running Cost
A 15 kW set feeding a single reefer container burns roughly 0.7 to 1.1 gallons an hour depending on setpoint and ambient. The integral tank on an undermount is typically larger than a clip-on’s, which is what makes these units suited to long chassis runs without a refuelling stop. Budget service on hours, not calendar months — a genset in continuous drayage service accumulates hours far faster than a road vehicle does.
Buying New or Used
New Stage V sets carry a manufacturer warranty and a clean emissions certificate. Used sets are worth buying when the hours are documented and the unit has been serviced on schedule — the engine and generator are both long-lived, and the components that fail first (belts, batteries, relays, fuel filters) are inexpensive.
