Where the Efficiency Comes From
Two design choices carry most of it. The 2.2 litre engine is a high-volume industrial unit rather than a specialist design, which means proven durability and parts you can actually buy. And the permanent magnet generator removes the excitation load that a conventional alternator imposes on the engine before it produces a single watt for the container. Less power spent on making power means less fuel for the same 15 kW at the reefer.
Tier 4 Without the Aftertreatment Headache
Carrier’s approach to Tier 4 on this platform keeps the emissions work inside the engine and its controls. That matters on a genset because a genset’s duty cycle — long hours at partial load, low exhaust temperature — is precisely the pattern that gives filter-based aftertreatment trouble. Fewer forced regenerations, fewer derates, fewer service events an operator did not plan for.
