Which Size Propane Tank Do You Need?

Tank size is driven by appliance load and how often you want a delivery, not by the size of your house alone. As a general guide:

  • 120–250 gallon — a single appliance, a cabin, a fireplace, or a standby generator.
  • 500 gallon — the most common whole-home size, covering heating, hot water, cooking and a dryer in roughly a 1,500–4,500 sq ft house.
  • 1,000–2,000 gallon — large or cold-climate homes, farms, and buildings with pool or shop heating.
  • 2,500–30,000 gallon — commercial, agricultural and industrial bulk storage, including NGL and LPG bullets.

ASME or DOT, New or Used, Above or Underground

ASME tanks are permanently installed and refilled where they sit; DOT cylinders are portable and swapped or taken to a filling station.
