Where a Tier 4 Interim Set Is the Right Buy

Outside the United States. Tier 4 interim is an earlier emissions tier than Tier 4 final, and for export operations and jurisdictions whose own standards are met or exceeded by Tier 4i, this set does exactly the same work as a later-series unit at a lower price. Inside the United States it is not an option at all — Carrier restricts these export-engine sets to sale and use outside the US, so the saving is only available to buyers shipping abroad.

The Engine Class Note

Carrier builds the Tier 4 interim PowerLINE around an export engine in the 19-37 kW class rather than the 8-19 kW class used for the later CARB-certified sets. That is a certification category, not a change in what the genset delivers at the container — output remains 15 kW at 460 volts, three phase, 60 Hz.

Applications

Export container operations, international drayage, and port and terminal work outside the United States. Carrier states that units built with these export engines are exclusively for sale and use outside the United States. For any United States operation, buy the Series 24 instead.

Mounting and Handling

The RG15 pin-mount frame is what makes a clip-on practical. The genset lifts into position against the container’s front wall and the pins engage the corner castings — a matter of minutes with a forklift or a reach stacker, and the same in reverse to remove it. Forklift pockets are fitted for yard handling.

Fuel and Service Intervals

Expect roughly 0.7 to 1.1 gallons an hour against a working reefer load, depending on setpoint and ambient. Service on engine hours rather than the calendar; a set in continuous drayage service reaches its interval far faster than the same engine would in intermittent use.

Buying This Series

Series 5 sets are the value option in the PowerLINE range and there is nothing second-rate about the machine — the output, the generator and the mounting system are common across the family. Confirm before ordering that Tier 4 interim certification is acceptable where the unit will work. If it will see California duty, buy the Series 24 instead. Ask us and we will check.
