Description
The Thermo King SL-100e is the light-capacity model in the SL trailer family. The SL platform is Thermo King’s long-running single-temperature trailer line, built around a four cylinder diesel, a belt-driven compressor and the microprocessor control system that fleets know from the rest of the range. The e suffix denotes the electric standby package. Listed at $8,500.

What Electric Standby Is Worth
A trailer that spends four hours a day at a dock is burning diesel for four hours a day to keep a load cold that could just as easily be cooled from the building’s supply. Electric standby swaps the engine for a motor on the same compressor. The fuel stops, the engine hours stop, the exhaust stops, and the noise drops far enough that a night-time distribution centre stops receiving complaints. For a fleet whose trailers dwell, it is the single highest-return option on a reefer unit.
Where the SL-100e Fits
Chilled distribution, dairy and produce, shorter vans, and operations where the unit holds a pre-chilled load rather than pulling a warm one down. For heavier duty look at the SL-200 or SL-400e; for a Tier 4 final platform with current emissions certification, the Precedent S-600.
Buying Used
Confirm hours, check the standby motor actually runs under load (it is the component most often neglected on a trailer that never plugged in), and inspect the evaporator coil for corrosion. Ask us to test both diesel and standby operation and to confirm the hour meter before you commit.
