Description
The Thermo King SG-3500 is a clip-on generator set specified for marine and container service, where the unit has to hold a cargo’s temperature in whatever weather the route delivers. Its engine is tested to run consistently between -40°C and +50°C — a 90 degree Celsius band that covers everything from a Nordic winter yard to a Gulf summer terminal. Listed at $10,000.

Why a Cast Iron Block
Cast iron is heavier than aluminium and that is the point. A genset lives outdoors, is handled by forklift, vibrates continuously and is exposed to salt air on a port apron. A cast iron block tolerates that treatment, dissipates heat predictably at sustained full load, and can be rebuilt rather than replaced when it eventually wears. Eco-governing keeps the engine at the speed the load actually requires instead of running flat out and dumping the surplus.
Running Off-Grid
The whole point of a clip-on genset is that a refrigerated container becomes independent of shore power. It can sit in a yard with no reefer plugs, cross a country on a chassis, or wait out a customs delay without the cargo being at risk. A 24.1 hp engine is what it takes to do that reliably for a 15 kW reefer load with margin for compressor inrush.
Applications
Marine container operations, port and terminal work, drayage, intermodal reefer moves and temporary cold storage where a container is used as a static freezer.

Diagnostics and Serviceability
The SG-3500’s advanced diagnostics do more than log a fault code. They give a technician the sequence of events leading to a shutdown, which is the difference between replacing the component that failed and replacing the component that caused the failure. On a unit that spends its life in a yard rather than a workshop, that shortens the visit and reduces the chance of a repeat call-out.
Fuel Consumption and Run Time
A 24.1 hp engine driving a 15 kW generator against a working reefer load consumes roughly 0.8 to 1.1 gallons an hour. Eco-governing trims that whenever the container’s compressor cycles off, because the engine drops to the speed the reduced load requires instead of holding full speed. Over a long haul that governing strategy is worth several gallons a day.
Buying Used
Check the hour meter, the condition of the mounting frame and pins, the state of the fuel tank internals, and whether output stays inside tolerance through a compressor start. Ask us for a load test and the hour meter reading on any used set before you commit.
