This 220 V to 440 V step-up transformer is the companion kit to our 230-460 V unit, for sites and countries whose nominal supply is 220 volts. It raises the supply to 440 volts so that three phase equipment built for the higher voltage — refrigerated containers, industrial motors, imported machinery — can run from it. Listed at $3,100.

220/440 or 230/460?

They are the same system described with different nominal figures. Distribution voltages drift and national conventions differ — 220, 230 and 240 all describe the same low-voltage band, as do 440, 460 and 480 at the higher one. What matters is the actual measured voltage at your supply and the acceptable input range of the equipment you are feeding. Measure before you order; do not assume from the label on the wall. Autotransformer or Isolating?

Three phase autotransformers are lighter, cheaper and more efficient than isolating transformers of the same rating because primary and secondary share windings. The consequence is that they do not electrically isolate the load from the supply — there is a conductive path through. For most industrial step-up duty that is entirely acceptable and is why autotransformers dominate the application. Where galvanic isolation is required for safety or for a sensitive load, an isolating transformer is the correct choice. Tell us the application and we will confirm which you need.

Sizing and Inrush

Size on kVA, and remember that motor loads draw several times their running current at start. A transformer sized exactly to the running load will sag on every compressor start, and the equipment downstream will see it. Add margin.
