Description

This 30 kVA three phase transformer takes a 480 volt delta supply down to 240 volts delta with a 120 volt lighting tap. It is a ventilated dry type unit with aluminium windings, compliant with DOE 2016 efficiency requirements, and it is reverse feed capable — it can be run backwards as a step-up transformer where the application calls for it. Listed at $3,100.

240 Delta With a Lighting Tap

This configuration is common in older industrial buildings and in shops running legacy equipment. The 240 volt delta secondary feeds three phase motors and machinery; the 120 volt lighting tap is taken from a centre-tapped winding to provide single phase power for lighting and receptacles. One thing to know: the “high leg” of a 240 delta with a centre tap sits at about 208 volts to neutral, and connecting a 120 volt load to it will destroy the load. Any electrician working on this system needs to know which leg is which, and the high leg must be identified in the panel.

Reverse Feed

Reverse feed capability means the unit can be energised from what is nominally its secondary, turning a step-down transformer into a step-up. It is a genuinely useful option — it lets one unit solve a 240-to-480 problem as well as a 480-to-240 one — but it comes with a caveat: inrush current on reverse feed is higher, and the taps do not behave as they do in the forward direction. Have it checked by an electrician before you commit to that configuration.

NEMA 1 Means Indoors

The enclosure as supplied is NEMA 1, which protects against incidental contact and falling dirt and nothing else. For outdoor installation the WS58 weather shield is required. If the transformer is going into a yard rather than a building, our NEMA 3R rated 45 kVA 480 V to 208Y/120 V unit is outdoor rated as supplied.

Dry Type Versus Oil Filled

Dry type transformers use air and solid insulation rather than oil. They can be installed inside a building without a vault, a containment bund or a fire suppression system, there is nothing to leak, and maintenance amounts to keeping the ventilation openings clear. That is why nearly all indoor distribution transformers at this rating are dry type.
