Description
The Thermo King SB-230 belongs to the SR-3 generation of the SB series. Where earlier SB units were mechanically excellent but blind, the SB-230 was built to be monitored — every unit in the series can be upgraded to integrated wireless communications, and the controller is designed around remote setpoint management rather than a driver with a manual. Listed at $5,000.

OptiSet Plus and the SR-3
OptiSet Plus lets a fleet lock a commodity to a setpoint profile rather than a number. Instead of trusting a driver to remember that ice cream runs at -20°F with continuous fans and bananas run at 58°F on cycle-sentry, the profile is loaded into the controller and the driver selects the commodity. The single largest cause of rejected reefer loads is a setpoint entered wrong, and this is the feature that removes it.
The SR-3 also moved diagnostics outside. The HMI sits on the exterior of the unit with a USB port beside it, so a technician downloads data, uploads a profile or flash-loads new software standing on the ground with the doors shut.
Buying Used
Thermo King’s own certified pre-owned standard for trailer units is under 23,000 engine hours, and that is a fair line to hold. Ask us for the hour meter reading, a cooling/heating/defrost cycle test and serial-plate photographs before you commit. Genuine Thermo King parts are worth the premium on this platform — the aftermarket belt and bearing failures we see on trade-ins are almost always imitation parts.
Applications
Grocery and foodservice distribution, frozen and multi-drop chilled work, pharmaceutical freight where temperature data logging is contractually required, and any fleet standardising on telematics-capable reefers. Compare with the SB-210+ if you need electric standby, or the Precedent S-600 for a Tier 4 final, CARB-compliant platform.
