Who Buys an NH3 Transport
Agricultural retailers and co-ops move the bulk of it — anhydrous ammonia is the most concentrated nitrogen fertiliser available at 82 percent N, and it is applied directly to soil ahead of planting, which makes spring a season of intense, short-notice hauling. Industrial buyers are the other half of the market: NH3 is the refrigerant in large cold storage and food processing plants, a feedstock in chemical and pharmaceutical manufacture, and the reagent in selective catalytic reduction systems that strip NOx from power station and refinery flue gas.
Buying a Vintage Cargo Tank
A 1970s MC-331 in current test is a working asset, not a relic. Focus your diligence on four things: the current external and internal inspection dates, the most recent pressure test, shell thickness readings against the original specification, and the condition of the valving, relief devices and pump. Running gear — brakes, tyres, suspension, lights — is routine trailer maintenance and easy to price. The tank itself is where the money is.
Compliance and Handling
Anhydrous ammonia is a hazardous material under 49 CFR. Drivers require a hazmat endorsement, loading and unloading demand the correct PPE and emergency procedures, and the tank must be kept in current qualification.
