Propane is one of the safest, cleanest, and most reliable fuels available — but like any fuel, it deserves respect and a few good habits. The overwhelming majority of propane incidents are preventable with basic precautions. Follow these proven propane tank safety tips to protect your home, your family, and your investment.
1. Know What Propane Smells Like
Propane is naturally odorless, so manufacturers add an odorant that smells like rotten eggs or a skunk. That smell is your early-warning system. Make sure everyone in your household knows it and takes it seriously — never assume a faint gas smell is “nothing.”
2. Respond Correctly to a Suspected Leak
If you smell gas, act immediately and in this order:
- Put out all flames and do not touch light switches, appliances, or electronics — a spark can ignite gas.
- Get everyone out of the area right away.
- If it is safe to reach, shut off the main gas supply valve on the tank.
- From a safe distance, call your propane supplier or 911.
- Do not return until a professional says it is safe.
3. Install Propane and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Detectors add a critical layer of protection, especially in homes with indoor propane appliances. Place them per the manufacturer’s instructions and test them regularly — a detector with a dead battery protects no one.
4. Maintain Proper Clearances
Keep the required clearances around your tank from buildings, ignition sources, and property lines, and never store combustible materials against it. If you screen the tank with a fence or landscaping, keep it at the proper distance and never enclose the tank in a way that traps gas.
5. Schedule a Leak Check at Every Fill
Have your system leak-checked each time the tank is filled, and arrange a professional inspection any time the tank is moved or has sat unused for an extended period. Catching a small issue early prevents a big one later.
6. Keep the Tank Area Clear
Trim back vegetation, keep snow and ice off the regulator and dome, and make sure the delivery truck has clear, safe access. A clean, accessible tank area is a safer tank area — and it makes deliveries faster.
7. Never Modify Valves or Fittings
Valves, regulators, and fittings are precision safety components. Never attempt to adjust, repair, or replace them yourself. Always use a licensed propane technician — this is not a DIY area.
8. Use the Right Tank for the Job

9. Don’t Run the Tank Completely Empty
Running out of propane is more than an inconvenience. An empty tank can let air and moisture into the system, which may require a professional purge and leak test before service can resume — and can introduce a safety risk if a valve is left open. 10. Buy Certified Equipment From a Reputable Dealer
