Buying a propane tank is a long-term investment, and the right choice depends on how much fuel you use, where the tank will sit, and whether you want new or certified used equipment. 1. Choosing the Right Tank Size

Tank size is the single most important decision. Too small and you’ll run out during a cold snap or a busy production week; too large and you’ll pay for capacity you never use. Sizing comes down to your appliances, climate, and how often you want refills.

• 120–250 gallon — Best for a single appliance (a fireplace, range, dryer, or backup generator) or a small home.
• 325–500 gallon — The most popular residential size. A 500-gallon tank comfortably heats a 1,500–4,500 sq ft home with whole-house heating, hot water, and cooking.
• 1,000 gallon — Large homes, homes in cold climates, or properties that combine heating with a pool, shop, or generator.
• 2,000+ gallon — Commercial kitchens, agricultural operations (crop drying, greenhouses), and light industrial use.
• 10,000–30,000 gallon — Bulk storage bullets for industrial plants, fuel resellers, and energy-sector applications.

A good rule of thumb: a 500-gallon tank is filled to about 80% (400 usable gallons) and a typical home uses 1.0–1.5 gallons per hour while heating. Sizing up means fewer deliveries and a buffer against price spikes and supply delays.

2. ASME vs. DOT Tanks

Propane tanks are built to one of two standards, and the difference affects where and how the tank is used.

ASME tanks (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) are permanently installed, stationary vessels — the large horizontal or vertical tanks you see beside homes and businesses. They are designed to stay in one place and be refilled on site. Every tank we sell for home and commercial heating is ASME-certified.

DOT cylinders (Department of Transportation) are portable and refilled by exchange or at a filling station — think forklift cylinders, BBQ bottles, and 33.5 lb industrial cylinders. They’re built to be transported full.

If the tank stays put and gets filled by a delivery truck, you want ASME. If it moves, you want DOT.

3. Above Ground vs. Underground Installation

Both above-ground and underground tanks are safe and ASME-certified — the choice is about aesthetics, space, and budget.

Above ground tanks cost less to install, are easier to inspect and service, and can be relocated. They’re the standard choice for most rural and suburban properties.

Underground tanks are buried with only a small dome visible, preserving your view and freeing up yard space. They require a sacrificial anode bag and proper coating to prevent corrosion, and cost more to install, but many homeowners prefer the clean look. 4. New vs. Used Tanks

Brand-new tanks come from quality manufacturers, carry full warranties, and arrive in pristine condition. Certified used tanks offer significant savings — every used tank we sell is inspected, pressure-tested where required, and confirmed to meet ASME standards before it ships. Used tanks are an excellent way to add capacity for a shop, farm, or backup supply without paying new-tank prices.

6. Delivery, Placement & Installation

We ship nationwide for a flat $350 freight fee per order to the contiguous United States, with typical delivery in 3–10 business days. Tanks must be placed on a level, stable surface that meets local clearance rules — generally at least 10 feet from buildings and property lines for larger tanks. We offer delivery and installation support and can walk you through site prep before your tank arrives. Your first fill is arranged through a local propane supplier, who will purge and pressure-check the tank.

7. Safety, Codes & Maintenance

Every tank we sell meets ASME or DOT safety standards and ships with proper data plates and valves. Always confirm local permitting and setback requirements before installation — these vary by municipality. Routine maintenance is minimal: keep the area clear, have the system leak-checked at each fill, and schedule a professional inspection if the tank is ever moved or has sat unused. Never attempt to modify a tank’s valves or fittings yourself.
